Mosquito Beach

Great place for a bike ride away from things. Long walk to the beach but worth it. Take some insect repellant as it didn't get its name for nothing. I had to scrape the bugs off my visor. Nice golf course with a cafe nearby. Very friendly with a great flat white and nice area to sit in the winter sun.

Quite a nice experience if you are in the area. I would not necessarily drive here specifically for the beach as it is quite a way out. There is parking for about 5 cars and I did not notice any toilets around. The walk from the car park to the beach (about 250m) is through a wooded area and is a steep downhill - not suitable for wheelchair access or old people. The beach was nice and quiet with a few fishermen on the shore. The walk back was quite gruelling and it is during the time where we found out why the place is called Mosquito Beach. You just could not escape them :-)

I visited this beach because I am drawn to explore the region, and wanted to see how far I could travel down this road, and by the way the last part of the drive here is on metal/gravel road for about 4km (not standard roads) It's a generic beach which requires a walk down a steep incline for about 12 minutes (24 minutes back though :). I've tried to show it in the photos but it's not easy to tell. Because of that you won't be bringing your BBQ (unless you want to annoy your family). Make sure you have good shoes (leave you jandals in the car)! There's not much beach to walk on either so don't expect a long beach walk (I think I might have been there at high tide though). When I see this part of the map of NZ I can now say "been there done that" :)

It's isolated and very undisturbed. The track down to the beach was closed on Easter weekend, it's an awe - inspiring sight looking down on the beach from above. The end of the road and open hilly pasture with rocks, tree stumps and grazing stock was a great sight to behold.

A bit of a drive out here. Mostly slippery gravel and is a bit dangerous in dark and wet weather. There are no toilets or rubbish bins out here. There is a steep and slippery walk down to the small beach. Walking up would be slightly tricky too on a wet day. Seems like an okay spot to just sightsee but not a great picnic spot. Waves looked rough when we were there but on a summers day it would be a fun swim. Kids would enjoy the beach but you will have to pack a lot and no changing spots either. Very small car park area as well. Would recommend to drive to and sightsee for a bit.
