UPDATE: Now a year later I tried again to see Mekaki Beach. There is security still, they would let me in with a local guide only. After a nice chat and a cigarette, they allowed me to join a group of locals that just arrived to see the beach. And Mekaki Beach is spectacular! Very wide, clean and with strong waves, so no swimming. ************************************** After a long ride I found out the beach is closed for some development project. The security told me to go back.
I been camping here some years ago, one of the best beaches I ever been. Now, security, army and some development destroying area. You cannot access the beach anymore. They don’t let you.
I first reached this beach by motorcycle in 2014 via an incredibly difficult track that began at Solodong. There is now a new road and the views are spectacular. Mekaki Beach is wild and almost deserted. Be careful here because a) the sea is very wild and b) on my last visit in 2019 some young kids tried to steal my friend's motorcycle even though we were only 100mt away. I kid you not. I chased them but they disappeared into the scrub. However they damaged the ignition switch so the key we no longer turn and we had to hot wire the bike to start it.. Left a sour taste in my mouth. But I will always go back to this beach. It is a gem.
Nice view from a vantage point up high in the mountains but there were security and army people blocking the way in to the beach. There was no way they wouldlet us through the barricade. They said the beach was closed for building construction.
Still my fav beach as of 15 Mar 2020. Its still not crowded, almost untouched by civilization. Kind of rare nowadays. It being almost untouched is a blessing but also a flaw since there are too much bushes, thorns, and dried coconut shells. Theres no internet access here, even phone signals are hard to get, coupled with next to zero security of any kind here, if youre met with misfortune it will be disastrous if you dont bring company. I suggest that you came here with another 2 or more friends and drive in a car. Its not that you cant reach it with motorbike, but its really not recommended. You better leave before sunset, since road lighting isnt exist for a few KM, its still under construction as of Mar 2020, so we can expect a change in the near future. But before that, i suggest you leave early to avoid pitch darkness and getting mugged. There are rumours about muggery around here, tho i never met that kind of misfortune in every trip i done. Please mind the trash, keep it clean. Its already rare enough to find a beach this clean, dont mess it. Buat Indog, ga usah nyampah! Batur sekotong masih meno, ndaq nadah2 begal turis lokal/bule, ndaq bangaq2 laloq jari manusie.
