Charming old homestead transformed into a cozy hut. No cooking amenities provided, so be sure to bring your own.
There is a beautifully restored hut located at the Northern end of the Abel Tasman track, right by the beach. It's just a 2-hour walk from the exit at Wainui, making it a convenient place to stay. The hut, which was originally a farmhouse, has been renovated and now looks fantastic.
I stayed at the beach for one night last weekend. The hut and location were nice, and the facilities were perfect. However, there was a strong unpleasant smell inside that lingered on our sleeping bags. It's been difficult to get rid of the odor.
The hut was fantastic, with a stunning historic building. We stayed in the bunks upstairs and enjoyed the nice firepit outside, as well as the drying rack, shower, and flushing toilets. We did hear some noises of mice or rats fighting on the roof overnight, but the entertaining wekas were a highlight as always.
This hut was the best I've ever stayed in. It had a big fire, around 20 bunks, and plenty of reading material about the history of the area and the building. I stayed in July, so it was chilly in the mornings. It takes about an hour for the fire to warm up the place. The stairs are narrow, so you need to be careful when going up and down them. There are three rooms in total, with two rooms upstairs and one downstairs. There is a large table with a few long benches. There is no lighting, so be sure to bring plenty of torches. Drinking water is available outside, and the toilets are located about 20 meters away through some bushes. There is also a small wood cutting area. There are lots of weka birds around, and they like to come into the hut and steal food, so remember to keep the doors closed.
